She/her/hersAbout Me
Letha McClary
Executive Chef, 39 Rue de Jean – Charleston, SC
Born and raised in Kingstree, South Carolina, Letha McClary found her passion for cooking in the heart of her family’s kitchen, learning alongside her grandmother and embracing the strong family values that continue to guide her today. From those early experiences, she developed not just a love of food, but a deep appreciation for how it connects people, traditions, and cultures.
After graduating from the Art Institute of Charleston, Letha began her culinary career at Pizza Hut before stepping into the fine-dining world as a line cook at the iconic 82 Queen. There, she met her mentor, Chef Marcus Shell, who inspired and challenged her to grow as a chef. Following him to 39 Rue de Jean, she quickly rose from line cook to sous chef, and ultimately to Executive Chef — a role in which she leads with passion, creativity, and purpose.
Letha’s culinary style is defined by classic French technique layered with Southern soul, a reflection of both her formal training and her roots. At 39 Rue de Jean, she embraces the restaurant’s legacy as a beloved Charleston institution, while continuing to evolve its menu and vision for the future. She sees herself — and the talented team she mentors — as part of the next generation shaping Charleston’s dynamic culinary landscape, blending tradition with innovation to create memorable dining experiences that honor the city’s past while pushing it forward.
For Letha, the kitchen is more than a workplace — it’s a community. And with every dish that leaves her pass, she’s not only celebrating the flavors she grew up with, but also writing the next chapter of Charleston’s ever-evolving food story.
