Janae Coaxum
She/her/hersAbout Me
Chef Tater Coaxum is a classically trained chef and the heart behind Tater’s, a ghost kitchen in North Charleston that has quickly become a local staple for soulful, Gullah Geechee-inspired cuisine. Raised in a family where food meant love, storytelling, and community, Chef Tater grew up watching and learning from generations of cooks.
Her journey into professional kitchens started with formal culinary training, but her calling has always been about more than technique. It’s about honoring her roots and making sure the flavors, stories, and spirit of the Gullah Geechee people continue to be celebrated and passed down.
At Tater’s, every dish tells a story, from seafood fritters to okra soup, red rice to her famous fried crabs. Chef Tater brings intention and pride to every meal, rooted in heritage and fueled by her love for the craft. She partners with local purveyors, leans into seasonal ingredients, and brings a level of care that goes beyond the plate.
For Chef Tater, this work is deeply personal. It’s about preserving culture, feeding the soul, and reminding people of home
