Shane Mitchell is Saveur’s Editor at Large. She writes frequently about the South, and particularly the Carolina Lowcountry, where her family first arrived in the 17th century. Her most recent book, The Crop Cycle: Stories with Deep Roots (Bitter Southerner Publishing) addresses the complicated history of the South’s most emblematic fruits, grains, and vegetables. This anthology was longlisted for the PEN America Art of the Essay prize in 2025. Shane also has five James Beard Foundation awards, including two M.F.K. Fisher Distinguished Writing prizes. She hates grits, but loves boiled peanuts.
